On April 28, 2023, San Juan College’s history changed forever when the mascot was introduced to the campus.
He has a head full of flames. He swaggers when he walks. He brings the HEAT to the competition. He was created by a lightning strike. He has a crown of fire. He sets your education aflame. His enthusiasm cannot be doused. He is the perfect combination of fuel, oxygen and heat. Can you feel the heat?
BLAZE is now a part of the SJC Family. He reflects the spirit of learning, sparks camaraderie and radiates success throughout this community.
Marcus Clyde and his daughters, Nicole and Natalie, are pictured with Blaze and President Pendergrass after winning the mascot naming contest. All three will graduate from SJC in May 2023. Congrats!
A very special thank you to all of those who participated in the naming contest for our new sun mascot. You have played a significant role in this momentous event at SJC. More than 450 of you submitted a name suggestion and 650 of you voted on his name. The name BLAZE emerged at the top of the list and our mascot name was chosen.
We would also like to thank President Pendergrass, the SJC Board of Trustees, Amanda Robles, Lizbeth Moreno, Margaret Clair, Jacinta Esquibel, Donna Ellis, Media Services, KSJE On the Road, Campus Activity Board, Associated Students, Herencia Latino Center, volunteers from SJCHS, Fire Science students, the Marketing and Public Relations department, the SJC Bookstore, Dual Credit Ambassadors, Department of Public Safety and Mary’s Kitchen.
